Truckers: You can be eligible for Express Entry in Canada

Trucking plays an invaluable role in Canada’s economy. Unfortunately, we are currently experiencing a shortage of skilled, qualified truckers. This shortage has led to empty grocery store shelves, shipping delays and increased prices across the country.
To reduce this shortage, the Canadian government is now making immigrant truck drivers eligible for Express Entry.
What is changing?
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is transitioning to an updated version of the National Occupation Classification (NOC) system. This system makes truck drivers and other occupations eligible for an expedited pathway to permanent residence in Canada.
Skilled workers eligible for Express Entry fill out a profile online and then apply for permanent residence. Those in this program can have their claim processed in six months or less.
What do candidates need to do?
To take advantage of this change, parties must ensure they are eligible. A person’s eligibility depends on which skill type category a candidate fits into, which includes:
- Federal skilled trades program
- Federal skilled worker program
- Canadian experience program
Depending on the category, a person will need to meet specific criteria regarding:
- English or French proficiency
- Type of work experience
- Length of work experience
There may also be standards regarding education or job offers unless a person is eligible under the Canadian experience class.
Who else is eligible?
Truck drivers are just one of more than a dozen occupations that are now eligible for Express Entry. Some of the other groups include:
- Assistant school teachers for elementary and secondary schools
- Bailiffs and sheriffs
- Correctional officers
- Aestheticians
- Pest controllers
- Bus drivers
- Dental assistants
- Heavy equipment operators
